Mr. Portelos has been a Staten Island resident his whole life. He went to Port Richmond High School and graduated in 1996. Wanting to do his best to help humanity and the environment, he enrolled in Polytechnic University’s Civil/Environmental Engineering program. After graduating with a Bachelors of Science degree in 2000, he spent the next 5 years working in the environmental inspection/engineering field in NYC. After climbing bridges, walking through dark subway tunnels and inspecting buildings for environmental hazards, he thought he could better serve his direct community by educating students in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

In 2005 he enrolled in Brooklyn College’s Master’s Degree program in Science Education understanding that he would take an approximate $20,000 cut in salary. After 2 more years of school he accepted a position at Berta Dreyfus IS 49. Since 2007 he has been successfully redesigning the Science Technology Engineering & Math (STEM) program at the school. The STEM lab has evolved 3 times in 4 years. In addition to modifying his own lab, he constantly pushed upgrades to the whole school’s technology infrastructure.

Currently Mr. Portelos is assigned to travel to various schools around Staten Island filling in and teaching a variety of subjects where he is needed.

Always remembering what it is like to be of adolescent age he uses his quirky humor and mixes fun into the lessons. Finding the latest high tech programs, he pushes advanced technology and basic engineering to all grades 6-8 and all levels of advanced honors, mainstream and special education classes.

Bring him back! I’ve known Mr.Portelos for 3 years, and let me tell you, he’s VERY good at his job. To this day, he still knows computer techniques most other computer teachers don’t know. Have trouble getting the attention of students in a class? While other teachers constantly repeat “turn off your monitor,” Mr. Portelos simply puts up a block screen that beams over to all the other computer monitors, which instantly alerts the students to pay attention. He’s also chill with the students, who get along with him and as a result, learn better from him. I haven’t met a teacher with as much passion for teaching as him.

Thank you AA. I don’t know who you are but I am assuming you learned from me and we were “chill”. Thanks for your support.

  4. Lee says:

For the past 2 years that I have known Portelos, he does what others can not do. He is able to maintain a class under any situation or scenario. His method of teaching was unique and that no other teacher can replicate. He was not only my teacher for a year, or my coach for 2 years, but the person I had looked up to and learned many things from, not just class based, but life in general. Portelos should have every rights to go back to I.S.49 and teacher again and possibly change the school into a better learning environment for students. You have my full support Portelos and that I promise you.

      Mr. Lee,
We had some good times practicing for Robotics during lunch and after school. I still remember the look on your face when we won First Place in NYC for Robot Design. Imagine that…Us….first place…out of hundreds of teams!!! Actually we don’t have to imagine it. It happened. If you learned anything though I hope you learned to never give up. You may be called stubborn and other things but never settle. I thank you and the rest for your support. They can fire me today and I may never be in a classroom again and I will still feel that I accomplished something with you guys.

  5. fportelos says:

Thank you all for your amazing words of support. You give me the courage to continue the fight. I cannot express the emotions your stories give me. If you learned anything from me, remember to never give up and fight for the good. It will be hard at times, but if it were easy everyone would be doing it.

    Portelos

  8. fportelos says:

I miss my students. I’m fighting to come back. See how childish adults can be. They have not told me why I’m out of school. I hope the students are at least working on learning Google Sketchup 3D design while I’m out.

  9. Aaliyah says:

  10. fportelos says:

  11. Hey Mr.Portelos, I’m from IS72, class 825. I love your website! I learned a ton of stuff by just scrolling through the home page! I found Google scetchup interesting, so I checked out your detailed tutorial, followed it, and made a house. I really like technology, and STEM, and that first time you visited my class last week in ELA class, I was so happy I found a teacher that has a common favor!
